Play & Develop

Knowledge Acquisition
Using the water stream from the watering can to tip the bird teaches cause-and-effect. It also demonstrates important STEM principles, including full and empty, the power of water, weight and balance, and the process of tools and systems.
Curiosity
When your child discovers that the bird tips over as a result of their actions, it ignites their curiosity, and pushes them further to try to understand how and why things work as they do.
Imagination & Creativity
The tipping bird and flower introduce a whole world of pretend play. Grow a full imaginary garden, do other pretend tasks, and interact with friendly creatures like the bird and ladybug.

Gross Motor Skills
In order to water the flower, your child will need to raise their arms fully, thus strengthening their gross motor skills.
Coordination
The act of tipping the watering can and purposefully aiming it into the correct opening develops your child’s hand-eye coordination.

Communication
Share nursery rhymes like “Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?” Ask your child what other plants they want to grow in their garden. Make up a story about the bird and ladybug together.
Cooperation & Sharing
Pouring water out of the watering can and setting off the chain reaction is a perfect opportunity to model sharing a toy and taking turns – either with you or with a sibling or friend. “First it’s my turn with the watering can. Now it’s your turn.”
